“Allow yourself to be inspired and let go.” This message couldn’t have come at a better time for me – thank you, Bryan! Lately I’ve been so overwhelmed with financial insecurity (it’s my first year after quitting my full-time job to be a writer), that I can’t sleep because I’m consumed with trying to figure out how I’m going to get people to notice me and (even more) like me. Is there anything less inspiring for a writer than desperately wanting to be liked? I get so afraid of never “succeeding” that I end up becoming the instrument of my own demise.
Now back to writing the novel that nourishes my soul. =D Happy writing!

Great points Bryan. One of the suggestions my nephew gave me was to make up a list of what success looks like for a book I was writing. I’ve done that with each of my books. Otherwise we use the wrong measuring stick. We use numbers. And numbers go up and down, they are unreliable.

It’s so true. We will definitely lose the magic in our writing if we write for ‘the bottom
line’. Society has become so profit, money oriented that creating for the sheer personal enjoyment of it has waned.

I have always written. However, I never did think of making money with it until my husband read something I wrote and said, “you have to finish this and publish it! Make us rich!” Lol I laughed at the time. Later though it brought so much anxiety about my writing that I had to step back. It was work then, I worried that I would get it right and people would like it and buy it.

I’ve now written another novel, and am finishing my second novelletta. That first work, the most promising one, is still unfinished. I think I might be able to get back to it soon and perhaps it will get published sometime. No pressure.

I’ve gotten back to writing because it’s what I do, because I have stories in my head that need to come out onto the page. A few people have read some of my work and I usually get positive feedback, but I still write because I find enjoyment in it.

I love this post, Bryan. It’s true we get so caught up in craving social approval, measuring our worth in the number of likes we get, and so on. When in fact even if our writing connects with just one person, if it helps or heals us in some way, then that means everything.
