On a whim I decided to try my hand at novel writing (I write poetry and other short pieces) and the finished product is a literary novel. Now, after letting it sit for a few years, I’ve pick it up back up to see if it was worth editing—the jury’s still out. The trends of today have taken a toll on my enthusiasm, so thank you for these encouraging words. Sometimes I feel very discouraged when I consider the books receiving acclaim, but it’s good to know there are people setting aside the world’s expectations and writing about things that matter.

One of my nephews encouraged me to make up a sheet of what would define success for me with each book I write. I can’t tell you how that has helped me, because I WAS looking at the numbers as a way of measuring. I had to change that right away.

I 110% agree with you, Anne. If we focused our energy and thoughts on the negative then we would never get anything worthwhile done. The process of writing is an end in and of itself and no one should be allowed to dissuade a passionate writer from practicing what is essentially one of the ultimate forms of human expression. Sales really aren’t everything.

Hello Pamela and thanks for your comment. I am happy to see that my thoughts on this subject encourages you to keep writing. I have never let rejection stop me from what I enjoy doing as a writer – for the true novelist he or she must continue to soldier on, keep writing, keep trying, taking the increasingly painful hits of rejection after rejection until, well, until someone out there catches on…or doesn’t.

Your article encourages me to keep writing. Not everyone likes to eat split-pea soup and not everyone will like the book I am writing.
Even your book, “The War of the Roses,” which was made into a movie, has a one star review on Amazon.
Books are like split-pea soup. You either like it or you don’t. But someone else’s opinion won’t stop me from making and eating the soup or writing my book.
All the best,
Pamela

I find it sad that what once touched us and drew us into the realm of releasing words to the world is now deemed less valuable and yet, I am not surprised.

You said everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and while I wholeheartedly agree, I’m saddened that some may be discouraged from going ahead with their dreams because of what they see that has taken the spotlight. Or they will jump the ship of their true desire and take the one followed by more.

But if they truly are writers, they will ignore what some say as many of the greats did. They will pursue their passion because it is like breathing to them.

I guess we can’t really be surprised when we see so many settle for so less. Instead of the meeting face to face, people settle for a quick text received in seconds. Listening to a real voice is trumped by witty words sailing through cyberspace.

Thank you for your post. I also enjoyed reading the quotes which could have stopped some of these writers, but instead fueled their passions even more.
