I make a living from academic writing but have been procrastinating a novel since forever, which creates resentment and some guilt, methinks. It doesn’t help that the writing account I work for has total and complete disregard for writers’ welfare. I have worked night and day for three days to deliver a 56-page research paper only to have it reassigned and heavily fined (yeah, I worked my ass off and basically got charged for it, from other jobs I’d completed), which was, I now think, the last straw. I currently don’t care. Deadlines, revisions, threats of fines, fines. They all don’t work anymore. Moreover, my novel writing project is stuck and no matter how hard I try, I can’t get my fingers caressing the keyboard. It’s real, am thinking of getting a dayjob that has nothing to do with writing and do creative work in the off-time…

I always think I’m coming out of it, but then I’m plunged back into my misery. It all started shortly after I finished NaNo, which I’m starting to think is the cause. I’m the type of writer that gets a dramatic idea, turns on a passionate soundtrack, and writes long into the night (as opposed to regular scheduled times where you force yourself to write, no matter what). NaNo made me drop the value of my good writing, and made me not care, therefore my writing turned into crap, and it was more of a race to hit the 50,000 mark then actually enjoying the writing experience.
I know sometimes you do have to force yourself to write, but this was different. This was taking and sucking all the fun out of my writing, and simply rambling on and on just to get a winner sign.
I’ve felt ever since like I have lost myself. All of the dramatic poetry and music that used to give me the shivers, don’t give me the shivers anymore. All of the passion for my characters and their stories have mostly left me; I still get good ideas sometimes, but I don’t feel as much connection with my characters, or as much belief that they are really with me and alive.
I don’t know what to do. This does help a bit, but I have done some of these things, and I still feel like I’m stuck in a pit. BUT. I am trying to view it from a more positive side of view, rather than “Maybe I’m just not a writer anymore, and I’ve changed, and I’ll be a miserable nobody for the rest of my life!” XD Which I have been thinking for months.
Thank you for the article!

Luckily I have no lack of creative ideas but I literally wake up feeling hungover some days. Guess I have to get past the guilt of leaving my characters in limbo and sign out for a while.

I’m a little late for the party but my writer’s burnout is in full swing at the moment. I’ve read a whole lot of ways to survive and pull yourself out of it but it wasn’t until I read your post and decided that I am simply going to take the rest of the month off and have a three week vacation that I felt something physically “lift” from me. I actually had to do this last year about this time now that I think about it but I didn’t know what was happening to me then, I only knew I needed a break from writing for awhile. Thanks again!

Mahrie, that’s great to hear that these techniques really do work for other writers! And I completely identify with that rebellion of brain and soul you describe. This summer has been one of those times for me.

Agreed. Sometimes you really just have to trust that time will heal your tired brain. Best of luck!

Some years life just was busy and no writing happened. But other times, times when I could write, my brain and soul shut down. They threw up the hands and said, “Ah to heck with it, it’s too much work.” Without realizing it, I did a few of the things suggested in this article and low and behold, back came my writer brain brewing new stories. Sometimes, timeout is just what the writer needs.

There are times when I feel burned out but not for more that 3 or 4 days. I find time to write on most days, so when I’ve invited to a friend’s house or a relative’s house I don’t feel guilty about going and usually have a good time. I’m sure there will come a time when the burnout will be bad though, and I’ll just have to deal with it. I do think you viewpoint is the only way to go. Just let it all happen with the idea that the love of writing will return.

i changed from one main point of view to two, giving each equal time. Instead of having both characteres POV in the same chapter I gave each separate chapters. It helped me concentrate the thoughts of one character at a time instead of going from one to the other. Also, I switched from first person to 3rd person, feeling that I wanted some authorial authority to inject some historical background which would have been strange to have from a first person narrative.
I finished the novel rather quickly after that and am now hoping a publisher thinks it’s worth publishing.
