Unlocking Communication With Your Teenager (and everyone else)

“If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”

The quote above is from Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and it might be the single most important thing we can learn as adults and teach our children. This link connects you to a very important tool that will help you understand how you communicate which leads to you learning how to communicate others, and that is step one.

In the age of hateful political drama, misunderstood text messages, Snaps, and Tweets, communication has fallen apart at an alarming rate. As parents and teachers, we see it happening right in front of us and we watch, almost helplessly, as the people we care about the most lose their confidence and self-concept behind a screen, and in a sea of adults that have also fallen to the political and social dumpster-fire that burns all around us.

According to Psychology Today, "Nobody cares to calm down, to consider what it’s like to walk in the other person's shoes, to entertain the notion that others may feel the way they do for reasons that are understandable and valid. Instead today's America, from our presidential candidates to our blogosphere and major media, more often thrives on outrage, emotion, and personal attacks." (https://lnkd.in/gTEckBQ)

As parents and teachers, we need to step back and learn about ourselves again so we can then teach our students and children about how to connect with others. The world is in desperate need of understanding and compassion and we hold the keys of communication, empathy, and self-awareness in our hands, as long as we can remember how to use those keys in the locks.

So this begs the question, where do we start?

I have the magic code!

1. We can start by identifying our strengths and values and the easiest and fastest way to do this is by breaking our code.  Do yourself a favor and click this link, then put the cards in order according to your values from most to least like you. Add your name and email address so you get your free report in your inbox and start learning how you best make decision and how you tackle challenges.

3. Next, have your kids or students take the same "quiz" using the link and see if their code is the same as your's. If it is, you already have the advantage in connecting in the same language; if it's not, this is where the work begins.

4. Learn more about your personal values system that you learned by cracking your code and about their's so you can teach your kids/students how to communicate with you and their peers with more intention and understanding. (This is focused on teens, if you have a 2 year old, start with them.)

5. When this decoding tool helps you begin connecting with your own family and you see the value in your classroom or your business, contact me so you can go deeper. I want to help you empower your teenager, not only for their benefit and for your peace of mind, but for all of us. My mission is to help teens along with the adults in their lives be more confident, more self-aware and to be physically and mentally healthier. I am available to speak to you, your school or school system, your organization, or your co-workers about how to increase connection (or sales) by 300% by simply learning how to communicate.

I am so excited to see the connections I am making in my classroom and look forward to sharing them with you as this journey moves forward. Please feel free to leave your comments and questions on how you can best use this tool.
