You are NOT a yo yo!

January is diet month in America. You've seen it at nearly every store you have entered since December 26th; trapped between holiday clearance items, Valentine's Day and Easter candy and countless ways that you can keep your New Year's Resolution to lose the weight this year are vegan organic protein shakes and bars made from non-GMO seaweed and hempseed. While you're spending big bucks on those nasty shakes and bars, make sure to get your gym membership renewed. After all, diet and exercise are the combination that we all know works the best for weight loss! Start now and watch those unwanted pounds drop like the Times Square ball!

Jump ahead to January 15th. Realistically speaking, at 15 days, you're probably done. January 12, which is the day most people have dumped their resolutions and is lovingly referred to as "Quitter's Day", has come and gone. If you left your goals out with the Christmas tree, you're certainly not alone. What happened? How did those excellent intentions, gym hours and snacks go by the wayside to leave you back where you started?

Diets are an economic and lifestyle staple in America. "A 2017 study found that obesity now drives more early preventable deaths in the U.S. than smoking. This has fueled a weight-loss industry worth $66.3 billion, selling everything from diet pills to meal plans to fancy gym memberships." (Time Magazine, May 25, 2017). SIXTY-SIX POINT THREE BILLION DOLLARS! That is twice as much as the $30 billion they are spending on pizza! Somehow, we have cornered ourselves into a culture that celebrates beer and pizza then leads us down the path to binge dieting as a holiday celebration. Does that make any sense?

What if I told you that you really can get off that yo yo of constant dieting, binging, and back to dieting again to make changes that will not only benefit your belt, but also your wallet? What if you have the power to choose happiness, abundance, health and lasting success without having to restart every year on January 1st? It is possible and it isn't about exercising until you want to throw up or deprivation. On the contrary, health is about feeding your body what it needs in all areas of your life, enjoying your food, having fun, and appreciating yourself and your intuition. It's about living life to the fullest (birthday cake included).

While diets focus on what you can not have or what you do not want, success focuses on what you GET to have and what you DO want. Diets focus on your hips or belly; health focuses on positive choices and growth. Diets have a finish line while health is a lifelong journey of success and wellness. Do you see the difference? Are you looking to lose weight or gain control? Are you wanting a quick fix or a lasting result?

So how do you do it? How do you actually move from diet mode to lifestyle mode? We already talked about systems and there are literally over 100 diets you could try. If you watched my Ditch the Diet video, you learned a little bit about how those diets actually work or don't work. You may have been surprised to know that you really already knew what to do. It's all there inside you just waiting to burst through.

What about support? Have you every asked your friend or partner to be your workout buddy? If you have, did it hold you more accountable to showing up for yourself? Support is crucial to making lasting change. Get yourself a buddy that will encourage you, cheer for you and maybe even make changes alongside you.

Finally, you know what to do, your friends will be happy to run, walk or drown your sorrows with you, but who is going to hold you to your highest version of yourself? Do you know that version of yourself that keeps getting put on the back burner? The person inside you who is screaming that he or she is there and begging to get out, but who keeps being shoved back down? What does that future you look like? What do they do? What do they see and feel? Why do you keep shutting them up? A coach stretches you and pushes you outside of your comfort zone in a way that most people do not do on their own. To break your old habits and create your best you, you must have accountability.

With the right system, the right support, and the right accountability, you can jump off that yo yo. You can feel empowered, successful, and confident that you are finally taking charge of your life and your happiness and that is something that definitely doesn't come from seaweed, shakes, or gym memberships.
